We think RTI is a unique engineering firm in a world of firms that are considered superior on general engineering and construction projects. However can they be expected to be great on all specific engineering disciplines? Our specialty or niche is in those disciplines that account for safety and reliability and the prevention of unanticipated shutdowns or even worse potential disasters and injuries. We are often thought of as an additional cost to any project because the customers expectation is that if they hired a world renowned engineering firm that firm should be expected to provide the protection we are asking to be paid for.
The capabilities of engineering firms are not in the buildings and offices but in the experience of the people. Whole generations of engineers change every 7 to ten years and often the experiences of an entire generation are not passed on to the next. Reinventing the wheel is not what a customer expects to pay for when selecting a contractor. Is past experience a true representation of a contractor's ability to carry out a safe and reliable project if the personnel involved in past projects are no longer in their employ?
All engineering firms, regardless of size or past experience, can rarely be experts in all facets of a technology, RTI has successfully partnered with some of these esteemed firms by joining with them early in the project to take responsibility for the design and oversight of those areas in which the end user and project owner has experienced and recognized RTI's value. RTI can be a positive asset when the owner is deciding the winning bidder. Often RTI's cost to the project has been more than offset by cost reductions made possible by RTI's participation early in the project development.
RTI has a staff of Principal and Senior Principal Consultants that have an accumulative experience of over 200 years in design, analysis, and project management specifically related to petrochemical plants, especially refineries and the components used in them. This experience has spanned the gamut of basic design of grass roots projects through construction, startup and operating, and in multiple subsequent turnarounds, each involving having to face and solve those kind of problems that occur during each of those phases. Each staff member has achieved industry-wide recognition in their field so that they are continuously called upon to help resolve problems when they occur. Our grea value is achieved for the owner/operator when we are called upon to be his representative at the inception of a project. We provide the owner with the expertise to monitor their contactors performance without having to sustain an in-house staff of experts, a staff of experts that should be on-hand whenever large resources are committed to design and build, but also that contain the risk of high cost if a design is flawed, regardless of whether the flaw is contained in the basic design of the plant or processes, but also if they are contained in the purchased components or their incorporation into the systems, or in the installation of those components.
Control over the systems, processes and components are assumed to be the aim of the specifications of the project. These control documents are prepared by the primary engineering firm selected for the project. History has taught us all that specifications are never perfect in their protection or assurance of safety and reliability. Knowledgeable engineers with years of experience are the best insurance against unexpected downstream problems. A single unscheduled shutdown can cost orders of magnitude greater economic losses than the fees we charge.
